Voice Therapy Spectrum

LMRVT and CSCFT Training for SLPs and Vocal Performers

Register for VTS Course

Voice Therapy Spectrum (VTS) is a training course focused on evidence-based, artitically informed behavioral voice therapy and training for SLPs and vocal performers. SLPs may use the materials for therapeutic purposes. Non-SLP performers may use the materials for personal speaking voice enhancement. The course presents a structured framework for understanding and applying Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy (LMRVT) and Casper-Stone Confidential Flow Therapy (CSCFT) within one a broader theoretical framework-a "spectrum."

The “Spectrum” approach is built around a clinical framework that can be applied differently depending on the patient, pathology, and treatment goals. The framework helps clinicians think through the what of training, meaning the biomechanical target and biological consequences; the how of training, meaning how people acquire and habituate new physical behaviors; and the if of training, meaning the factors that affect patient engagement and participation.

The course is delivered online, making it accessible to clinicians and performers who want to complete the training from their own location and return to the material as part of their continued learning, on their schedule.

The Clinical Reasoning Behind VTS

VTS is grounded in basic voice science, voice biomechanics and biology, perceptual-motor learning, and patient engagement. Rather than presenting LMRVT and CSCFT as isolated techniques, the course teaches them as related approaches within a broader voice therapy spectrum.

LMRVT targets relatively more complete vocal fold closure compared to CSCFT and the use of a semi-occluded vocal tract during training . CSCFT targets slightly greater vocal fold abduction without the use of a semi-occluded vocal tract in training.

Both approaches produce voice within the range described as optimal vocal economy, favoring good acoustic output with relatively minimal vocal fold impact stress and minimal subglottic pressure. Both also rely on shared principles of motor learning and patient engagement. The choice between approaches depends on clinician judgment, patient preference, and patient pathology.

VTS helps clinicians and vocalists move beyond memorizing training steps. It supports clinical reasoning about why a method is selected, how therapy is shaped across sessions, and how patient engagement influences training success.

What This Course Covers

This online course provides foundational knowledge in basic voice science, voice biomechanics and biology, perceptual-motor learning, and patient engagement.

From there, the course moves into step-by-step applied training in Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy (LMRVT) and Casper-Stone Confidential Flow Therapy (CSCFT). Participants learn how each method is organized, how therapy targets are selected, and how clinical decisions are made as training progresses.

The course includes step-by-step video guidance for implementing therapy across sessions, along with one-on-one therapy demonstrations showing Dr. Verdolini Abbott working with patients. These demonstrations allow learners to observe how therapy is introduced, shaped, and progressed in real human interactions. The course also presents outcome data for LMRVT and CSCFT based on large-scale clinical trials. In addition, participants are introduced to methods for creating flexible and personalized adaptations to any therapy program, as well as for creating individualized voice training for patients and vocalists in the moment without an a priori structure

The course package includes the LMRVT Clinician Manual and CSCFT Clinician Manual to support professional learning and clinical application. Patients manuals can be purchased additionally from the MANUALS page of this website. Participants also complete course knowledge checks to support learning and meet completion requirements.

Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for:

  • Speech-language pathologists who treat or wish to treat voice disorders
  • Voice clinicians seeking structured training in behavioral voice therapy
  • Clinicians and vocal performers interested in LMRVT, CSCFT, and evidence-based voice training
  • SLPs and vocal performers who want to strengthen their understanding of voice science and clinical or pedagogical reasoning
  • Clinicians and vocal performers seeking practical demonstrations of how therapy and training unfold across real sessions

What You Will Learn

By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to:

  • Describe the foundational concepts of basic voice science, voice biomechanics, and laryngeal wound healing biology.
  • Explain how perceptual-motor learning and patient engagement science and principals shape voice training outcomes.
  • Describe the theoretical framework behind Voice Therapy Spectrum.
  • Identify the biomechanical targets and biological consequences of LMRVT and CSCFT.
  • List the steps of Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy.
  • List the steps of Casper-Stone Confidential Flow Therapy.
  • Apply clinical reasoning when selecting or adapting therapy approaches for individual patients.
  • Describe how LMRVT and CSCFT relate to the concept of optimal vocal economy.
  • Use therapy demonstrations and course materials to support clinical implementation.

CEUs and Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the required course components, participants receive a certificate of completion, valid for two years.

This course is approved for [XXX] ASHA CEUs, and CEU details, completion requirements, and reporting information are provided as part of the course registration and completion process.

To renew certificate status after the initial two-year period, participants must complete the renewal requirements, including participation in at least one quarterly group coaching session per year.

ASHA CEU reporting for eligible live coaching sessions may be offered separately when available and may require separate registration and completion of CE requirements.

To apply for renewal or learn more about the renewal process, please visit the Certificate page.
